Iron headcovers, or no?

Personally, I couldn't care less about being taken seriously when I show up on the first tee and putting a cover back on my club never slowed me down.

I bought a new set of irons two years ago and used covers on them for the first season. Now, looking at those clubs after a second season without covers, they don't look much worse for wear so maybe they didn't help all that much after all.

That being said, if you like keeping your irons looking as new as possible, use iron covers and ignore all the noise... It's your bag!

I don't use them myself, but my golf buddy does. Our clubs are the same age, and other than the grip color, it's hard to see any difference between them. They do not slow down play (we play ready golf) and he has not had an issue with losing them. One advantage to head covers that some are overlooking though...they may help you disguise that new 718 set from the Mrs (or Mr) who doesn't know yet that there are no longer 714 or 716s under there. This could give you a bit more time to find that "equalizer" gift. :)

Go ahead and hate on all the TM. Either way I use iron covers too. I decide that once I take them off for
the round they stay off till I clean my clubs. (Which I do after every round). Helps speed up play. I just throw the covers in a pocket on my bag. Also it helps me remember what clubs I did or did not use during that round to help determine if that club needs cleaned or not!

I've never used them and I don't see myself ever going with them in the future. I have played with plenty of people who use them and they seem to like them. As far as pace of play goes, I don't think it slows things down a whole lot. It probably takes them a second or two each time they put the cover back on. If you feel they are necessary then use them, if not then don't. To each his own.

I currently have some on my new AP2 Black irons. Reduce bag chatter on the clubs. They are beautiful and I want to keep them that way as long as I can. I purchased some off of ebay with the american flag on them.

This is actually a pretty interesting debate. I don't personally use iron covers. I have read through and see so many TT'ers are proud of and wanna keep their stuff looking sharp, can't hate on that. I like a sharp looking bag too.

My only thing is its a golf club, intended to be swung at a high rate of speed and hit a hard object that sits amongst the ground. Some knicks and dents and scuffs are going to happen if your using the clubs. I imagine its hard to make a proper strike if you are worried about keeping the imperfections from showing up all the time.

I use iron covers, like some of you protecting my investment is paramount. I have been using neoprene iron covers for about 10 years. I have never seen any rust on my clubs. The neoprene covers are quick and easy to get on or off and are flat in your pocket.

I'm kind of perplexed on the amount of people who claim it slows down the round. I use them because it protects the clubs from damage and eliminates that stupid chatter noise in the cart and as they are carried. It is pretty simple to chose your club, walk to your ball as you put the cover in your pocket, make the shot, reach in your pocket and replace the cover as you walk back to the cart, place club back in the bag, then sit in the cart. These actions take about as much time as if you are a non-user of covers. Maybe it is the action of lighting the cig, opening the beer, taking practice swings, BS-ing, or leak taking that adds to the slow play? In the end, it is a personal choice. There are reasons for slow play and headcovers aren't the biggest offenders.

Personally do not use them but see how others would want to keep the showroom look as long as possible.

I've used them for travel only. I can't recall the last time I've seen anyone using them during a round. They can't protect your clubs when you are inevitably going to get some dings and wear and tear when you swing with enthusiasm off of less than perfect lies.......

It's all personal preference. If you like them then use them. I don't like them but know plenty of people that use them.

I just got a new set of AP1's and want to keep them sharp looking as long as possible. I am using iron covers but only for storage purposes. My clubs are in the car all the time. So i'm using iron covers when they're loaded up in the car. I take them off once i get to the course. I don't want to slow up play or worry about misplacing a cover after a shot.

Yes I do use iron head covers but only when I pack my bag for travel. Ironically I use the iron head covers to help protect the carbon fibre (CF) shafts for my hybrids and woods (metals). After removing the heads from the CF shafts I will place the CF shafts in the middle area of the bag and use the irons, with their head covers on, to try to secure and support the CF shafts to prevent them from rattling about during travel. This has worked very well for me over the years and I have never had an issue with any CF shaft damage.

I got paired with a group one time that said we play quick so keep up, I said go ahead I'll play with the next group, I also said if you're in such a hurry then just stay home! no matter what you do you're gonna be there for 4 to 4.5 hrs so relax have fun it's a game! And never ever makes decisions because what other people might think. BTW the main thing that slows play is the guy that thinks he should play from the back because he hit one good drive and should be up at the white tee's with me LOL

Personal preference...I used to use them until I was teased for the "club condoms" repeatedly. I then decided that I would show off the Titleist hardware.

Never bothered with iron head covers before but since getting my new AP3s I’ve invested in some covers .As irons these days cost so much and I want to keep them as shinny for as long as possible .

Only when packed in the Club Glove for travel, as the TSA and baggage handlers could care less about your bag. And they never repack you bag like you initially did. Once at destination the covers go the the GC case.

Very very interesting. First things first. If you really think iron covers slow down play, you are just a fool. They do not. Only if you lose one, and you really really want to find it.

I personally use iron covers, but only when traveling to and from the course. I’ve got kinda a heavy foot and drive kinda fast, so my bag rolls around some. When I get to the course, I do take them off. The sound of bag chatter really is amazing, so I like that.

When I get home I take them off and clean my clubs and keep them off. That’s pretty much it!

Also, if someone gives you crap for using them. Nail a 5 iron right next to the pin, and that should shut them up. Who cares what people think. Play your game, and do it well.

My clubs are used repeatedly to hit a golf balls sitting on grass/sand/dirt/mud/who knows what all. If they can handle that, they surely don't need any protection just sitting in my golf bag. They're going to look beat up after a couple hundred rounds anyway, can't see trying to baby them when they're new.

I might feel different if I ever rode in a golf cart. The noises I hear sometimes from people's cart bags when they drive over an expansion joint in the cart path or over a tree root make me wonder if they've knocked the clubheads clean off the shafts!
