Range times

Hi Simon,

I used to spend an hour at the range, hitting as many balls as physically possible which wasn’t helping my game. I now spend two hours hitting 50 balls, going through the full on course process before each shot, I now enjoy visiting the range as I know it will benefit my game.

What is the range??
This is something I don’t do enough.
Practice is the only way to get better, I really need to change my ways if I want to improve.

Whilst you're right about practice, the range is almost a different game to the course, don't you think?
Nice flat stance, not-so-tight lies, no need to be quite so precise with strike, lots of targets, not exactly sure how close to target the ball landed/stopped, minimal putting... Very comfortable
I tend to get lulled into a false sense of security by the range and get well and truly bitten when I venture back out onto the fairways. Sometimes think that the course is the better yardstick and training ground and that range/practice ground are better for targeted improvement (eg bunker work, or "new" shots/techniques). Sometimes think I get more fun & insight from a bounce game than a whole winter of range work. What are your thoughts?

I agree that time on the course is better than the range, in fact I hate the range but it's a necessary evil if I can't get to the course or need to try out some changes..you tend to hit balls too frequently get less feedback than you do on the course in terms of distance for carry and roll and as you point out lies are the same. One big plus on the course other than the exercise is you can use your ball of choice..

Depends what I'm doing, but for just the range no putting or short game I set aside an hour or so

I like to go to the range with a task in mind such as Wedge or short irons, driver & woods. Try to make it as fun as possible, mixing up the targets & hitting different shape shots. Usually I'm at the range inbetween 1-2 hours.

The range I go to doesn't have any short game facilities so it's just a bucket of 40 balls (more than enough for me)that I split into 5's...which takes around an hour and depends if I film anything.

Then it depends on what I'm working on from my last session or round. But I hit no more than 5 of any shot or to any target.

I usually only take odd or even irons (6,8,PW or 5,7,9) and maybe a hybrid if that needs work.

I haven't hit my driver at the range for nearly a year so It stays at home with the TS fairways.

Short game practice is done at my club (usually before a round) or chipping in the garden, and putting indoors on the Putt Out mat and pressure trainer.

I find it depends on what I’m trying to achieve. Some times I’m just going for a checkup to make sure everything is in order such as alignment and ball striking but other times I’m trying to change something. I’ve found my best sessions have been less than an hour as any longer it’s easy to get tired and fall into bad habits.

I think quality over quantity is important tbh I feel like I achieve more when you go through your routines and don't hit as manh balls as appose to hitting loads of balls without much aim or purpose tbh
