  1. Hey TT,

I'm traveling down to San Antonio this coming April and planning on playing a round or two. Do you guys have any recommendations on traveling with your clubs?

I tried putting a "Service Clubs" sticker on my case but it didn't work. Had to check them as cargo. You will get a lot of different responses on this question. Some prefer the "Ship Sticks" method. Others check as luggage. I always check as luggage since i get one or two checked bags for free (depending on the airline and/or seats). I also have both a soft case and hard case. The hard case is always used on overseas flights or flights with multiple connections. I will use the soft case if going on a direct flight and need more room for stuff in the bag. My soft case is a bit larger than the hard case. If I know I am going to play, I definitely take my own clubs. I will do rental if its a last minute decision to play. I just never feel comfortable with rentals, especially since most places no longer carry Titleist rentals. Also, you didn't ask but love the courses out there. I have not played the TPC courses but love La Cantera's 2 courses, Hyatt Hill Country, and the historic Brackenridge Park.
  3. Awesome thanks for the tips! I am actually staying at La Cantera and planning on playing there. Which of the two courses is your favorite?

Not sure how busy you will be or if you will have a rent car but if you have some time and are able, venture down to the Riverwalk area. See the Alamo and maybe eat somewhere on the River. We always grab some Tex-Mex at Casa Rio. We also like Mi Tierra at the Mexican Market a few blocks west of the Riverwalk.

I like my own as well and I’m a 2 million miller so that’s not problem. I have had clubs damaged in the past so I’ve cut 2 pieces of pvc pipe that I put in the bag. They are about 2 inches longer than the clubs, placed 1 each side and covered with the rain hood. Then the bag goes into a rolling travel bag. Since that change, no problem!

Yea Tom, I also cut two PVC pipes that protect the legs when I use the soft case. I have had TSA flip the bag where the legs were exposed to the side and/or top of the bag and the aluminum legs were slightly bent from other bags being dumped on top. Easy and cheap prevention.

They are both good but the views from the top of the hill on the Palmer Course are pretty special. Palmer is my favorite.
  8. La Cantera should be really nice in April.

    I'll throw in a recommendation for The Quarry -- https://quarrygolf.com/ -- It's a fun track.

I use a hard case (SKB Deluxe) for my golf clubs and tend to pack soft items around my clubs to help absorb any turbulent treatment from baggage handling. "Knock on wood" have not had any damage to my golf clubs but lesson learned with damage to ski equipment transported in a soft-sided case.

April in San Antonio will be very nice. I played the TPC Oaks course multiple times in February 2019 and it was in fairly good shape. The Valero is in early April, so I'd imagine that the Oaks could still be in tournament condition if you're there soon after. I'm curious about the Palmer course experience at La Cantera. There is one Palmer design close by Milwaukee that is a treat to play. Enjoy your trip!
