Scotland Golf Trips

The best months would be late June, July and August. The days are long and you have the best chance of dry weather.

My wife and I went to Scotland this past August for 10 days, including 8 days of golf. We researched it all on the internet and booked everything ourselves. We weren't disappointed in any of the places we stayed.

The only change we'd make was Kathy wasn't handicap elligible for North Berwick West Links and after walking the course one evening she said she'd have given up a day of golf to walk along while I played that course.

2 nights to start in Edinburgh, train to St. Andrews for 4 nights, train back to Edinburgh to pick up rental car, 3 nights in North Berwick to play 4 courses around there, one night back in Edinburgh before flying home.

In St. Andrews we played Eden, Castle and New [twice]. I got up at 4:00 am and stood in line to get onto the Old as a single, but didn't make it. While in North Berwick played Glen, Dunbar, Gullane #2 and Kilspindie.

We'd do it again in a heartbeat! A wonderful trip. Great golf, sightseeing, etc.. We've also been to Ireland when our oldest daughter did a semester of study abroad in Limerick. A trip back to both countries is going to happen some day.

Friends of ours did a Scotland trip with an agency and had a great time, too. Depending on your preferences I don't think you could go wrong either way.

Didn't know if you are going alone or planning a group trip. Most of the package offering have a 4 person minimum. That was always my problem until i found the St. Andrews Golf Week back in 2016. It's a handy way to go alone, guaranteed play on the Old Course, meet new friends, and play some good courses.

More than likely it will be a solo trip; would like to spend 14 - 17 days golfing and touring the area. It's tough getting people to commit to a trip because most of the guys I golf with have a difficult time not playing at the home course.

With the exception of about 10 trips to the British Isles. I have always gone in October. The fares were considerably cheaper. The courses were a lot less crowded. If you are traveling as a single, show up very early at the Old Course without a tee time, put your name in the ballot box or on the sheet, and you will probably get on. St. Andrews is a wonderful town. You will meet some new friends and have a great time. I drove all over Scotland and Ireland. Always checked in at the Tourist Board in the town I was staying in for a B&B. Never had an issue. Always got to meet new people and have a wonderful experience. I gave them a list courses I wanted to play & they put it together. We played Kingsbarns, the New Course, Old Course, both courses at Royal Troon & Prestwick. I really wanted to play Carnoustie & Turnberry but between the Open and how my vacation days feel, they weren’t possible.
We’re actually planning a Northern Ireland trip with them now.

Fly all that way to play on a Cow/Sheep Pasture.....crappy golf course/crappy weather.....I don’t get it!!

Where are you seeing these golf courses?

Until you make the trip, you really can't comment on the courses. Links golf is something that every serious golfer needs to experience. The shotmaking skill required to play links golf will let you know how solid your game really is.

Some of us that are members of those " cow / sheep pastures " are very proud of our courses and many of them are consistently ranked in the Top 25 in the World.

Yes, the weather can be challenging at times, but as has been said the Scottish summers are really quite nice. The humidity is very low and temps run in the mid 70's. Great weather to walk and experience true links golf. It is also nice to be able to play as late as 11 PM!

Ted, You just might understand if you went and played links golf courses.

We just went this past May and had amazing weather. Temps in the high 50’s most days but crept into the 60’s and almost hit 70 our last day there. Stayed in North Berwick and Played Dunbar, Muirfield and Gullane #1 before heading to St Andrews for Old Course, New Course, Crail, and Kingsbarns. Have also gone in October and temps were mid-50’s to low 60’s. No matter when you go, I would pack for “worst case scenario” weather. We booked everything ourselves and got a VRBO. Houses were amazing and for the 8 of us, was only between $80-$100 per night per person. Plus, we saved a TON of money buying food, beers, and scotch for the house compared to a hotel and eating out all the time.

No matter what you decide, it will be a TON of fun!! Have a great time!!
