Help with Fading Driver

  1. I'm a mid/high handicap, 14-16 index depending on the season. I generally hit everything in my bag straightish. My driver, TSi2 9.5, regular flex Tensei, used to go straight, though now always fades. I've got a sore left elbow that started about 4 months ago. I had to adjust my grip more open to put less stress on it. That really created this fade. It's ok, I can compensate by lining up the left side, and it will usually end up center or right side of fairway. Drive distance after roll out is usually 230-250. I'm going to a fitter in a week, and I'm sure they can, or will say they can, adjust something that will help. But I feel like it's a swing fundamental issue.

Any good sources I should look at online? I'm going to schedule something with my PGA pro here locally to see what he says.

Having you pro take a look is the only sure way to correct this properly. We would just be guessing. Sounds like you feel it is a weak grip. Could also be ball too forward if other clubs are going straight. Ball to far forward without moving well onto your left side will cause a slight out to in club path which will cut across the ball. Good luck and hope that left elbow gets better.

Your last line answered your question. Sometimes injuries force us to make adjustments to our swing that turn out to be detrimental. Get a professional to look at it and they will probably point out a slight flaw that you can correct. I think that is one good reason why a golfer can get stuck at a certain handicap range, injured or not.
    Good luck with it.

Not really. Nothing like having a qualified professional looking at your set up and swing to determine the issue. Let him fix it for you. Good luck.

    Great idea George.
  7. were you fitted for the current driver? I would personally take a little tune up lesson to address the issue. I've developed a bit of golfers elbow in the past and what helped with that was some stretches I found on youtube, as well as some KT tape.

For me when i'm having a little bit of an off day I generally check two things, aim and tempo. Your elbow pain could also be causing you to do things in your swing to avoid putting it in a position that cause pain if that makes sense.

A drill I like to do that works for me is to try and hit big hooks and big slices. Just 50% swings trying to create extremely exaggerated shot shapes. I find for me this gives me two feels for reference that I can work from and better find a neutral.

Hope that helps... and you find your feel! But definitely ice, stretch and kt tape.

    Cheers
  8. Thanks for all the advice. I will get a lesson scheduled and I'm going to a fitter in a week that was already planned since Christmas. Also getting a cortisone shot on the 28th. Hoping to sort all this out before spring.

By the way, a controlled fade is a good shot to have in your bag off the tee. I normally hit my drives rather straight but can rely on my fade when I need it. Your pro can help you get yours under control.
