Anyone have a good drill or two for an early release/casting?
dan pgalesburg, IL
hey kevin i have the same problem...i was told that a impact bag would help. while goofing around on the range i started focusing on starting the down swing with my left knee turning towards the target. i didnt get a chance to film it to see if it made a difference but it felt like the ball came off a little better. so made be try starting your down swing from the ground up. good luck

I have read a tip where you get a piece of flat cardboard and put it a couple inches behind the golf ball. If you are casting you will hit it because you aren't holding the lag. You can start with the cardboard farther away and move it closer.

Swing back and forth with a very short swing until you get the hitting action you want through impact. Then gradually lengthen the swing without losing that action that you have through the impact zone.

Check out Michael Breeds "Footjoy box drill" on the site.. Great drills as only he can do it. Hope it helps!

depending on how bad you want to fix the problem, i recommend buying the medicus swing trainer. i let my friends borrow mine when ever they have a casting problem, or ill take it out when i am having a problem. another great swing trainer was the Swing Setter from david leadbetter. dont think the later one is around except on ebay now.

try hitting the ball on the toe of the club, its an instant fix
Not trying to be stupid but what is the logic on hitting the ball on the toe of the club.
Thanks, Watty
it forces you to swing from the inside.

One thing that might help with delaying the early release is to practice hitting punch shots. If done properly, this will cause you to keep your left hand from breaking down. That is, if your a right hand golfer.

After reading the discusion i have a few coments. toe'ing the ball is a Temp fix and it you do it you'll constiantly be returning to this idea to try to fix your swing. the Impact bag it great and i recomend starting with this and if you catch your self early relesing agine try the old towel under the left arm trick. Get a Camra and record your swing from the back and the side see if your still on swing plane. alot of times these problems develop from Core swing fundimentals breaking down. check your swing plane the adjust your training techniques to fix these flaws.

If and when I lose my rhythm and lag, I take a 7 iron and separate my hands on the grip. Being a right handed golfer, I put my right hand about two or three inches below my left hand and focus on "hanging on" to my release. I've never played hockey, but I relate this "split hand swing" to what a slap shot with a hockey stick might be.
I start out by taking very short back swings and stopping just before impact to remember what position I should be in at impact. I do this with the hands separated. Once I get my mindset back to where my impact position should be, I then (while still keeping my back swing short and hands separated) swing through impact. I can eventually work up to a 3/4 swing gripping this way.
For me, having the hands separated allows me to exaggerate or delay the right hand release to produce the lag at impact. It helps me to regain my timing at release and create lag.
