It's happened to me as well.  I had my wedge and 8 iron both suffer this misfortune.  However, it's important to know that it only affects the cosmetic of the club and not see and impact on performance.

I think the best answer to your delima is a new set of 714 irons!  This is an opportunity to make lemonade out of lemons.

However, if this doesn't give you enough rationale to move into the new irons, the good news is that it is just cosmetic and should not impact the performance of the club. 

The club isn't truly chipped.  When steel get's dinged like that, the steel moves around and creates humps and dips.  

What you need to do is some good old fashioned cold smithing.  Take a hammer that has a completely scratch free surface (use a fine file to smooth the hammer if need be).  With the club in one hand and the hammer in the other, gently 'tap' down the raised areas.  It doesn't take a lot of force, but after a number of well placed taps, the club should be in better shape.

Hi Ruben, thanks for your post. Unfortunately, it is truly chipped. The plating has chipped off and what I can see is a darker color of steel. The good thing is that it won't affect the performance.

Don't know if you have followed some of the threads lately, but there is a solution to your misfortune....IRON COVERS!!!  Now, it depends on how old you are, if you like the chatter, or if they are pretty boy irons.  Either way, it's a solution!!! LOL!!!  Have a good one.

ha! I'm not sure I am skilled enough to hit a ball with covers on :)

Don't know how head covers would help when he hit a rock on his downswing. I try not to leave my head covers on when I swing my clubs. They don't work very well when I do.

I have had this happen a couple of times, but mostly on the sole of the club.  I took mine to a local golf shop that has a club repair person on sight.  He used a belt type sander/polisher to take out a lot of the blemishes.  They are not showroom perfect but they look a whole lot better.  He charged about $5.00 per time and it only took a few minutes to do. Just a word of disclaimer.  My clubs are 2008 AP1's (thus cast not forged).  So I'm not sure what a process like this would do to a forged club.  I'd suggest that you find a shop that does repairs and ask them if they can help.  Hope this helped.

I took my 8 iron off some pine straw that apparently had rocks underneath it.  It got a very similar chip.  I haven't noticed any lack of performance.  That was about a year ago, and now it's almost flush.  

I was going to post about my situation but then I saw this thread. Almost exact same thing happened to me, but it was with my 56 vokey off of a wash area around a green. Mine is more of a gouge then a chip. I'm googling cold smithing now!  Thanks for the idea .
