Quick Poll: Changing Golf Ball Models

Good point, Mike. When I go for a club fitting I make sure I am hitting the same golf ball I currently play and have been fitted for. Taking it to the extreme. =)

I definitely noticed a difference when I played a Pro V1 I found versus my usual Pro V1x.

Don't know if it's a head thing, but if I play a "cheaper" ball or even a different model Titleist bal, every part of my game changes from drives to putts. Different feel, sound, attitude, and results.

Changed from ProV1 to ProV1x about 4 years ago and stick with it no matter what conditions I play. I do occasionally switch over from white to yellow if playing in low-light conditions like fog, drizzle, or dusk. That is not very often now that I am living in the Phoenix area but I do take a few yellow ones to Bandon every year.

For me, the difference in the X and regular ProV1 is slight, but noticeable with trajectory. I just prefer the feel of the X model off the wedges.

I recognize the difference in ball selection mostly in putting.
That is why I stay with ProV1.

Each ball has characteristics that are unique. Higher quality like Pro-V's behave differently than other level and brands. If you want consistency you have to stick to one brand and level. Switching up balls will result on inconsistent performance and inconsistent scores.

I have much more control over a ProV1 than I do an ProV1x. Not to mention the difference in trajectory between the two.

I'd like a ball with the flight characteristics of Pro V1X, that is aligned to a slower swing speed. I like the height of the V1X flight, but I like the compression characteristics of the AVX

ProV1x is actually a good ball for slower swing speeds. It creates greater spin with less clubhead speed allowing for height on full shots and more bite on short chips. The AVX compression you are talking about would be the "softer" feel. Interestingly enough, feel is actually you ears reacting to the sound. You cannot actually feel the ball through the club but your ears equate firmness to the clicking sound of the contact. The new model ProV1x has a better sound but not quite the muted sound of the ProV1 and AVX. We all compromise a bit on feel, sound, spin, trajectory, etc. as we pick the ball best suited for our individual needs. Hopefully you find the one that works best for you.

Absolutely! I prefer to play the Left Dash but they are difficult to find so when I run out I go to the V1x. I have to remind myself that it will back up (the left dash usually hits and releases a touch on greens) so I have to adjust my game.

I too can tell the difference between ProV1 and ProV1X. ProV1 feels softer and flies longer for me. Gives me more confidence. ProV1X feels harder and flies much higher for me. I already hit the ball high anyway. Back to the "poll", I agree it changes every shot in your bag.....

Former NXT Tour player, I started using ProV1x, but when I went for a fitting surprisingly the ProV1 distance loss was barely noticeable. ProV1x gave me 3 yds longer off driver, but 300 rpm more spin, more side spin, irons were less than 100 rpms more, and wedges at 100 yards out came up 99 (no roll out) and ProV1 98 with 1 yd roll out. So I switched to the ProV1 for the softer feel. I hit it plenty high enough, and Chicagoland winds I'll take the lower ball flight off driver and give up the 3 yards.

Sounds like you found the secret many people just don't understand. Gaining a yard but not having feel and control will not improve your game. I am one of those guys playing ProV1x, not for distance but for the extra spin I need on irons and wedges. I could gain a yard on irons with a lower flighted ball but not control it as well on the greens. Enjoy the feel and control you get with your ProV1 and wishing you many low rounds in the future.

I think its crazy some people will say the ball doesn't matter and they can't tell the difference.

I have buddies that play very cheap balls and wonder why they aren't getting them spinning around the greens. Pretty obvious to me!

It makes a huge difference. When I switched to Tour Softs from a cheaper ball, I could immediately tell a difference. Better spin control and honestly, it just sounded better. Great confidence booster!

A recent "experiment" consisting of changing from my AVX to a "comparable" ball from another mfr reminded me of the consistency of all Titleist balls...whatever model suits your game.

Absolutely! When I switched to Pro V1, it was a textbook example of fitting the ball to my scoring clubs, but subsequently be driver settings needed to change in order to maximize performance.

Concur completely. I play the Pro V1x, with an occasional round or two using a Pro V1, especially on those days I am using my back-up set of Titleist clubs. Today, I opened a sleeve of old NXT Tour S balls I had lying around the house and used them for my round. Clearly different results inflight characteristics, distance, and feel around the greens. Can't say I dislike the ball when putting, taking only 30 putts, including two-putting some from well over 80 feet, but they are clearly different from the Pro V1x. Will stick with what works for me -- Pro V1x.

YES!!! Pro V1X for me shot to shot, round to round, season to season... the consistency of the ball is what matters most to me. When I hit my 8 iron I know it will carry 140-145 every time. I know how it pitches, chips and putts every time.

Yes! Left Dot is my favorite, but Left Dash is my go to a more readily available ball to get. I need low spin and firm. I like the ball flight of the Dot over the Dash but I feel they react similarly overall on and around the green. The low spin off the tee is a must!
