712U, AP1, or AP2 for the 3 & 4 irons

    I am upgrading to new 714 irons from my 710 AP2's, one option I am seriously considering is going with the 712U in the 3 & 4 irons.  Has anyone gone this route?  I did an extensive longer term demo so I am going with the 3 as a minimum as I love the control and length, but am struggling with a reason to not just order them instead of the 3 & 4 that come with the set.

    Getting fitted at Northview in January, any feedback on this is appreciated.

    BTW likely going with the AP2, but possibly the MB in the 7 or 8 thru PW.

    To be honest, I would definitely go with the 712 U 3&4, because I am currently gaming the 712 U 3 Iron, and it is a monster off of the tee. But off the turf, for me it gives a lower trajectory and is a lot easier to hit low sting shots in the wind. But if you are looking at just an easy to hit 3 and 4 iron that flies high and lands soft, you should consider purchasing the 714 AP2 3 and 4 iron. Hope this helps. :) Best Regards... Eric S

    I agree with the off the tee part, it was close to my 5 wood, as far as off the turf, I choke down a bit and get the standard 3 iron distance with better control, it's that flys low part that is the issue.  I am looking to try a different shaft with a softer tip, possibly the steefibre 110.

    I too choke down on the club, but putting in a lighter, higher launching shaft would be a key thing to do to launch the ball higher. But you could also maybe put a graphite shaft in that iron. I saw Scott Peircy at the Canadian Open this year, with Project X Graphite shaft in his 712 U, so that's where I got the idea. But I will be putting in a Tour-AD Iron shaft. Hope it helps... Eric. S

    712U is that perfect club to flight some lower shots into larger greens and great off the tee, helping keep the spin rate down, avoiding some wind. I would get a 3-712U, a 3 and/or 4-hybrid and then decide how the best gap can be matched with either a AP1 or AP2. This option can allow you to avoid the 4Iron on some configs and add another wedge. Windy days swap out the 3-hybrid for the 712U, Driver, 4 Wood, 2/3 Hybrid, 3/4-712U, AP2 4,5,6, MB's7-P, 2 Wedges and the flat-stick.

    I also play a 712U, I have the 2-iron as I don't carry a traditional hybrid anymore. the 712U is a great alternative off the tee for me but I also like using it into Par 5's as more of a long iron. I have a graphite shaft in mine although its a heavy iron shaft. Ive been experimenting with 105-115g graphite shafts. There arent many out there and generally the heavier graphite shafts tend to feel pretty boardy. The ones I have found to be good so far are, Steelfiber, Recoil, MCI and the new RIP Tour. I believe only the Steelfiber is available straight from Titleist, but any good clubmaking shop can get you what you are looking for.

    The 712U is low launching by design. 

    At the National Fitting Centre, we have multiple shaft options for the 712U (PX, KBS tour, DG).  No matter which shaft, it is still pretty low launching.

    For better off the turf performance I would suggest:

    -adding loft to the 712U

    -AP1/AP2 714 3 iron with your shaft of choice

    -19/20/21 913H/HD with your shaft of choice
